Canon Identity in NY −2 ( Paper : A4)
Desktop publishing. The birth of books made on the desk.
Challenges and Solutions: The client needed a print sample of the new printer and wanted a groundbreaking look. The idea is that the print sample should be at the same level as the quality of the entire Canon and the quality of the design. However, in reality, when the salesman leaves the site, the sample left at the customer's place is never seen again and either goes straight to the drawer or is thrown away. Is it something that can't be done?
The books lined up in the bookstore are printed by the printing shop. DTP (Desktop publishing) means desktop publishing, in which work such as allocation for editing books and newspapers is performed on a personal computer and output is performed by a printer. It also served as a report to the Agency for Cultural Affairs.
The proposal this time is to actually challenge a lot of 300 books as a book, not as a sample. Therefore, the number of pages in one book is 88, and a total of more than 26,400 print experiments have been conducted. High-mix printing with thick paper, plain paper, parchment paper, etc. on the page. That is also a proof of an excellent printer. Print everything on the front and back and use it as a book as a sales tool. He presented such an attractive attempt for the first time in Japan. Imagine expanding the possibilities of this as an application.
As if to synchronize, the story of the IT business / design business industry inspection was raised from the Agency for Cultural Affairs to New York, where information was disseminated at that time, and one person was able to solve a wide variety of issues. It was a miracle. Also produced a CD-ROM. Received the London International Advertising Awards.

Every man has his Identity New York is a "melting pot".
There, what they are like expresses the country and their identity.
This production began by jumping into NY's bosom, experiencing NY with the skin, using hands and feet, making full use of the five senses, and building a unique human network. From that, I gained a unique perspective from NY, and the theme of "IDENTITY" and a project for producing books suitable for color printers were born.

When you feel it, it comes from the same thing.
Many people are longing for Japan.
Respected.
I feel creative and aesthetic.
Hiroshi Aramata Many of the works featured in this book are made by collecting what has fallen, met, and found on the streets of New York. The work of gathering them together and breathing new life into them is actually the most divine act. Also, the garbage on the street has been killed once. By collecting it, combining it with other garbage, connecting it, and displaying it, it will be caught in the consciousness of the viewer again. Identity is always a resynthesis. This act of resynthesizing and shining a spotlight is one of the points of art in the 20th century. I think that was possible only in the theatrical space of New York.

New business
It was NY to be created.
Extracting an essay.
I think it was before I was in elementary school. Whether it was the time when the broadcast time of NHK TV was over or the time of news, the earth was slowly rotating on the monochrome screen.
And from there, terrain like "Dragon's Otoshigo" slowly appeared. I was proud for some reason even though I was young. Japan has that "shape". In other words, the land as a form clearly exists on the sea, and Japan on the map can be clearly seen. The terrain has the uniqueness and independence of design work.
From now on, whether I like it or not, the barriers between nations are getting lower and lower, as represented by the Internet, and I chose New York to feel it on my skin. People from 194 countries live in New York. As is often said, it is a microcosm of the earth. I flew like a pigeon, ran like a dog, sniffed and explored New York. What I saw there was the existence of a strong, individual identity of many ethnic groups and people, as opposed to the non-uniqueness of the terrain of the nations.
Going to New York was also about seeing Japan from the outside. At the same time, I also saw New York with a ruler that had lived in Japan. Regarding the work performance of the service industry, I felt that Japan had a higher level than New York.
I think Japan has been aiming to finish high quality products as soon as possible. As a result, it became a "kamaboko type" with a narrow base but a considerable height. While this is reassuring because it has a certain level of quality and level, it has the problem that it is difficult for tremendous talent and surprising combinations to pop out.
New York, on the other hand, felt like a "saw-shaped". The amazing guy is amazing. There is considerable variation. There are many parts with low quality and low level, but there are also many talents that are jumping like Kira stars. It is not often that excellent talents are biased toward a certain industry.
There are many people with outstanding talents in various industries.
These talents share their dreams, capital is invested in them, and a whole new play and business is created by a number of innovative combinations.
Unfortunately, I think Japanese companies are still not good at it. The Japanese still rely on "the same as everyone". However, while retaining its goodness, it may be important to obtain something that is "not the same as everyone", that is, an identity whose subject is "I" rather than "us". I hope that the diverse identities of that job will play a healthy role. Nobuhiro Shibayama

20210701 Addendum: I went to the Americas, but it seems that Atlantis and Mu existed long ago. But some people at Atlantis shoot some things in the center of Terra (Earth). It was a big deal. It took a long time for the problem to be resolved and people to live again. The case of Noah's Ark also came up at that time. Therefore, Terra seems to have broken down the continent into small pieces as it is now, and the earth's axis has tilted about 20 degrees. After that, there was Japan with the shape of a dragon's spawn, such as Europe, the Middle East, China and one continent, Australia. The remnants of the people who lived on that continent are called Atlantic, and the Japanese archipelago separated by the sea and those with Japanese nationality seem to have Mu's identity. Japan to be proud of. Indians originally lived in the Americas.

New York craftsmanship - sophisticated individualism -

The Yamanote Line in Tokyo is extremely crowded in the morning and evening. The New York subways are also in rush hour in the morning and evening.Ru. This is something I saw shortly after I started living in New York.
At a certain subway station, a fat lady from the platform said in front of the door that was about to close, saying, ``I'm going to do this.''If you don't get on, you won't make it in time,'' he yelled, ``Please let me in somehow.'' In response, a beautiful blonde woman who was already in the car raised her voice. ``Fuck you! Space?'' I guess he meant, ``Where is there room for you?'' ``But if we don't ride this, we won't make it in time,'' said the old woman.
In the end, the word "bitch!" was exchanged, and the blonde beauty quickly got off the train and attacked her with a handbag. The beautiful woman used her arms to push the giant lady as far away as if she were a maid, then quickly jumped onto the train again. And, as fate would have it in the movie ``Sliding Doors,'' the door closed neatly in front of the aunt. Winning the instant battle, the skilled blonde simply said, ``Well, this is my space. And I'm here.'' She snorted triumphantly as she stood before her. Even my eyelids felt hot.

New York is not just Manhattan. I decided to walk around the suburbs of New York City.
Unfortunately, it was raining lightly on the morning I decided to do so. You can go to Brighton Beach and Coney Island in about an hour from the 23rd subway station where I live. I thought I'd go there and check it out.
As you cross Manhattan and Brooklyn, the scenery suddenly changes. At this moment, I felt for the first time that the whole area, including the area around New York, was called "Gotham City." The subway begins running on the ground and travels on an elevated line above low buildings. Following the walls to the left and right are graffiti drawings of signs proving identity in the style of illustrations. The atmosphere was starting to feel dangerous, but I headed towards my destination in the light rain, wondering if there was something new I could see beyond this seemingly dangerous atmosphere.
I had heard that Brighton Beach is like the ``Enoshima Coast'' for New Yorkers. Maybe that's why I thought Coney Island was an amusement park near the coast, similar to Minato Mirai Yokohama. I thought it was an interesting place with a lot of people moving around, even if I took the slight inconvenience of transportation aside.
However, both were different. The Ferris wheel was stopped and all the stalls were closed. There was only one shooting shop. The place was open and three black men were unmotivated and just shooting. A man who looked like Jack Nicholson had been soaked in alcohol came out of the store. He took out a crumpled target shooting ticket from his pocket and told me, ``You should do it.'' I said no. But once again, he is angry and says, ``Do it! Why don't you do it?'' Then I walked to the shore.
There weren't many people on the coast, and the Ferris wheel looked lonely. I walked from Coney Island towards Brighton Beach. There is also a famous place called Brighton Beach in the UK, so I thought there might be more people there. As you walk slowly along the sandy beach, the Atlantic Ocean stretches out before you under the cold sky. I could see the shadow of a ship that looked like a tanker in the distance.

In New York, she shared a room with Smyre in Soho, but for the second half of her stay she rented an apartment elsewhere. At that time, I drew N.Y.
I think it was before I was an elementary school student. Perhaps it was the end of NHK TV's broadcast time or the news, but the Earth was slowly rotating on the screen. From there, a landform resembling a ``dragon's nest'' slowly appeared.
When my parents told me that it was Japan, I felt happy for some reason. I don't really remember why, but I thought Japan was great. This is probably because the shape, which resembles that of ``Ryu no Otoshigo'', is impressive, has a strong presence, and even seems to contain something spiritual. However, in the case of other countries, perhaps it was because I was too young to understand the shapes well.
That's why I didn't know much about the number of countries in the world for a long time. However, now that I'm older, I look back at the geography of the earth and the existence of countries, and I realize that there are so many countries. Moreover, many countries are shaped simply by drawing boundaries on the ground, and it is difficult to look at them and immediately say, ``This is the shape of your country.'' Japan has that “shape”. In other words, the land as a form clearly exists on the sea, and therefore it is easier to recognize Japan as it appears on the map. It has the uniqueness and independence that we call design work.
From now on, whether we like it or not, the barriers between countries will become lower and lower, as exemplified by the Internet, and even our design work will have to involve working with other countries. I was beginning to feel these needs firsthand, so last fall I chose New York and decided to travel there. He then stayed there for over half a year.
Currently, people from 194 countries live on the small island of New York. As is often said, it is a microcosm of the Earth. I wanted to know through their bodies where they lived. It was as if the image of the earth I had seen when I was young was brought to life at my feet.
I flew like a pigeon, ran like a dog, and sniffed around this small planet, New York, as I explored it. The results were then put together in one form. What I saw there was the strong identity of many ethnic groups and people, in contrast to the non-uniqueness of each country's topography.
Return report
Dear Sir or Madam
I would like to express my sincere gratitude to all of you for your continued support.
I completed the six-month long JAGDA-recommended overseas training for artists by the Agency for Cultural Affairs, and was able to safely return to Tokyo on May 9th. I would like to thank you for your kindness during my departure and report on my return.
I feel that the work, expanded circle, and management that I have done by connecting my far-off office in Tokyo and New York are exactly the design style of the Internet era. I believe that my challenge will be to provide feedback on each one of them.
We look forward to working with you for many years to come.
In closing, I wish you all the best in your health and success.
Sincerely

I created the art collection ``identity in NY'' and ``identity,'' which were printed using only a color laser printer. This involves everything from planning to art direction and bookbinding. Despite the fact that the quality of output has reached a high level, in many cases DTP is simply a part of the normal printing workflow. Although there are still problems with binding and bleed, this book is desktop publishing in the truest sense of the word, and is a presentation that suggests that information could be disseminated more individually.
The title ``identity'' conveys our thoughts and messages about the future of Japan, where we will be looking for something more different than something that is uniform. What do you think about the rapid advances in output equipment?
In 1996, Hewlett-Packard's large-format printerHP Designer's LABOWe planned and operated a free print experience showroom for designers, but at the time, it was still not possible to easily produce large-format prints due to cost and quality. Nowadays, fields such as large-format inkjet and color lasers can even surpass printing, depending on how they are used. Advances in output devices are also bringing printing closer to the personal level. It has become possible to do a variety of things, such as shortening the journey and creating more time to think about it, and developing projects in harmony with the region and city. I think it is significant that we are now able to output what we need in the amount we need.
With so many media, we need to think more carefully about how we use them, including the meaning of one-to-one marketing, and there are also environmental issues. In advertising and publishing, there are many things that are created even though they are not necessary. This is a big topic, but resources are limited, so we need to use them more appropriately depending on the purpose. I believe that future creators must have a perspective on the global environment.
Have you ever been impressed by the output situation overseas?
Before I went to study abroad in New York, I visited Xi'an and Shanghai, and I found that the spaces were spacious and the output size was correspondingly large. Large-format output in Japan is based on the size of a station wall, but in China, the standard size is one wall or mural size. The equipment and know-how for this purpose have also been developed. Even in New York, the standard size is one wall. Rather, posters and billboards are seen as mass media. Times Square and other places have a lot of production, mainly for show business, and there are even specialized production companies. These printers are large printers that use winches to set roll paper.
However, even though it is a signboard, I felt that there is a wide range of possibilities in the sense that it breathes with the city and is in harmony with it. Technological innovation is remarkable, but how should creators face this situation?
Young creators these days are changing the way they collect information. Many young creators may not fully understand the characteristics of the output devices they use. In the past, there were experts in each field such as printing and platemaking, and they were asked to do the work for them, but the current situation has made it difficult to do that due to cost considerations. Nowadays, as digitalization progresses and the scope of work for designers expands, there may be a need for people with coordinator-like roles. That's why I think the time will soon come when ordinary people can become motivated and become designers without any specialized knowledge.
Creators are required to have the ability to design their work - Nobuhiro Shibayama
We asked Mr. Shibayama, who has just completed an overseas training program dispatched by the Agency for Cultural Affairs, to talk about the situation overseas.
